Hand built clocks by David Creed

Creed Clock - Clock Makers and Restorations

Skeleton

The front cover of "Skeleton Clocks" by Derek Roberts inspired me to create this version.
The movement has a dead beat escapement with a duration of 8 days, made about
 1900 - 1910 as a  factory clock originally.
The rest was made in the workshop- to be honest it would have been easier to make the
gears myself as they took forever to file into shape.
The clock stands 20" high without its Victorian dome. The Corinthian capitals were
a welcome break from normal activities as I turned these by hand
(messy but great satisfaction). All screws, washers, even the pendulum rod is blued.

Grasshopper

This clock was designed by Bill Smith, USA. It has a variation of Harrison's Grasshopper Escapement. I have made a number of design changes as follows:

bulletFusee ratchet wheel- outside as per Longcase construction
bulletFrench clock style motion work for reduction 12 to 1
bulletreshaped Grasshopper pallets
bulletsmall escape wheel has no spokes and is in-fact a brass rim with 60 teeth which is fixed to the large escape wheel with four small spacers and screws this reduces the weight of the escapement a fair amount
bulletchapter ring with roman numerals and spade hands

          Clock Repair Hint's and Tips.

I have gathered together some useful clock repair articles for anyone who is new to Horology, or is maybe curious as to what exactly happens to your clock when in for repair!

David West has kindly made space on his website to allow me to pass on a little knowledge that has taken me 30 years to learn. One thing that I would say at the outset is, don't try to take all the information in at one go. Take each process, one at a time and try to master that subject before moving on to the next. Some people will no doubt say, it's all right for him to talk, but I am self taught and all I had was a second hand copy of the book, De Carles clock repair. At times the air was blue as I struggled to master some task or other, so take heart it can be done!

I have been looking at the NAWCC message board for over a year now and most questions on the site are centered around.

Bushing clock plates.

Pivot polishing, filling, burnishing etc.

Making workshop tools.

These articles take some time to put together so be patient and they will appear on these pages but for now I have included some articles that have already been published, either in the Clocks magazine UK or the British Horological Journal, enjoy. David Creed

The first article shows how to make a chuck to hold clock wheels safely in your lathe                                          CLICK HERE
